100-year-old WWII veteran ties the knot with his 96-year-old sweetheart in France following D-Day commemorations | Global News

In a heartwarming ceremony in Normandy, 100-year-old American World War II veteran Harold Terens finally tied the knot with his 96-year-old sweetheart, Jeanne Swerlin. The couple’s love story, spanning nearly a century, culminated in a beautiful wedding attended by family and friends, some donning military uniforms.

The ceremony, set to the tunes of “I will always love you” and “Ave Maria”, was a dream come true for the couple who exchanged vows in the town of Carentan-les-Marais. Following the nuptials, they were honored guests at a state banquet hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, in the presence of US leader Joe Biden.

Terens, dressed in a light blue suit, and Swerlin, in satin pink, shared a tender moment as they embraced and swayed to the music. The bride, overcome with emotion, joyfully said “Oui!” when asked if she wanted to marry Terens.

The couple’s love story is nothing short of extraordinary, with Terens expressing that marrying Swerlin was the best time of his life. Their union, coming after commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, symbolizes a lifelong commitment to love and companionship.

As the guests cheered and celebrated the newlyweds, it was evident that their love had touched the hearts of many. Terens, a decorated war hero, was praised for his service and dedication to his country, with Macron honoring him with the French Legion of Honour in 2019.

The wedding of Harold Terens and Jeanne Swerlin is a testament to the enduring power of love and the beauty of finding companionship at any age. Their story serves as a reminder that true love knows no bounds and can blossom even in the later stages of life.
