110 Members of Parliament in Kenya Sign Impeachment Notice Against Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Linturi

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Bumula Member of Parliament Jack Wamboka has taken a bold step by filing a notice of motion to impeach Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi. This move, supported by 110 legislators, accuses Linturi of gross violation of the constitution and criminal negligence under the Penal Code.

This development marks the second motion against a member of President William Ruto’s cabinet, following a similar motion against Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha. Nakhumicha’s handling of the prolonged doctors’ strike in public hospitals has been heavily criticized.

Wamboka’s motion targets Linturi for his alleged role in approving the procurement and distribution of fake fertilizer through the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) channels. The MP emphasized that the quest to remove the Cabinet Secretary is not politically motivated but rather a necessary step to hold public officers accountable.

Several lawmakers, including President Ruto’s allies and members of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya, have signed the motion. The process for the removal of a Cabinet Secretary, as outlined in Article 152 of the Constitution, involves filing evidence and garnering support from a third of the House membership.

If the Select Committee finds grounds for removal, the Cabinet Secretary will face a trial in the National Assembly, culminating in a majority vote. The Speaker will then transmit the resolution to the President for further action. This impeachment motion sets the stage for a critical examination of accountability and governance within the agricultural sector.
