Sport Whanganui and Nga Tai o te Awa recently wrapped up their successful 12-week Lifestyle for Life Challenge with a community walk around Springvale Park, where participants were rewarded with spot prizes for their hard work and dedication.

The Challenge, which aimed to promote positive lifestyle changes that are sustainable beyond the 12 weeks, offered participants a variety of activities and resources to support their journey to better health. From health assessments to information sessions with guest speakers, cooking classes, and even a mindful dance movement session, the program covered all aspects of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Darren, one of the coordinators of the Challenge, emphasized the importance of exploring different facets of leading a healthier life in the long run. “Our goal is to provide participants with the tools they need to achieve their goals and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

One of the key focuses of the Challenge was heart health, with the support of the NZ Stroke Foundation. Raising awareness of the FAST message – Face Arm Speech Take Action – was a crucial component of the program. Strokes can affect people of any age, and in New Zealand, a significant percentage of strokes occur in individuals under the age of 65, with Maori and Pacific communities being at a higher risk.

The good news is that up to 75% of strokes are preventable, and participants were educated on how to reduce their risk through maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, reducing salt intake, and avoiding smoking and vaping.

As the Challenge came to a close, participants gathered for a community walk around Springvale Park, where they were celebrated for their achievements and commitment to their health journey. Spot prizes were given out as a token of appreciation for their hard work and dedication over the past 12 weeks.

The success of the Lifestyle for Life Challenge has inspired Sport Whanganui and Nga Tai o te Awa to continue offering the program to the community. Those who are ready to make positive lifestyle changes are encouraged to join the next 12-week Challenge. Overall, the Lifestyle for Life Challenge has proven to be a valuable resource for the community, providing support and guidance for individuals looking to improve their health and well-being. By focusing on holistic wellness and offering a range of activities and resources, the program has empowered participants to take control of their health and make lasting changes for a healthier future.
