16 Democrats join Republicans in limiting Biden’s power to withhold weapons from Israel

In a surprising move, sixteen Democrats in the House of Representatives joined forces with Republicans to push back against President Joe Biden’s decision to withhold weaponry to Israel. This legislation was introduced after President Biden announced that the US would not send weapons to Israel if they attacked Rafah during their military campaign against Hamas in Gaza.

The bill, which is unlikely to pass in the Senate, aims to prevent federal funds from being used to stop the delivery of defense articles or services to Israel. It also requires certification from the Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense that any withheld defense items are eventually delivered to Israel.

House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the importance of showing support for Israel amidst criticism of the Israeli government’s military tactics. However, President Biden is expected to veto the legislation if it reaches his desk.

Notably, Jewish Democrat Lois Frankel from Florida was among those who supported the bill, citing the urgent need to support Israel during this challenging time. The list of Democrats who backed the legislation includes individuals from swing districts and strong supporters of Israel.

This vote highlights the ongoing divide within the Democratic party regarding US policy towards Israel. Progressives like Ilhan Omar have criticized the bill, arguing that it infringes on the President’s constitutional authority. Meanwhile, tensions within the party continue to simmer as different factions advocate for varying approaches to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
