The American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of Lawrence honored Memorial Day with a touching ceremony at Oak Hill Cemetery on Monday. The event was attended by community members who gathered to pay their respects to fallen military personnel.
The ceremony began with a flyover of planes, a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Attendees looked up to the sky as four planes soared overhead, symbolizing the bravery and dedication of our armed forces.
As the ceremony continued, participants recited the Pledge of Allegiance, a solemn reminder of the values and principles that our nation stands for. The event also featured the Avenue of Flags, a display of patriotism and remembrance for those who have served.
Among the attendees was Korean War veteran Leo Shaw, who sang the song “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” near the gravestone of his late wife. The emotional moment captured the spirit of the day, honoring the memories of loved ones and the sacrifices of those who have served.
The ceremony concluded with Lt. Col Albert Ballard, a retired US Army member and a member of the American Legion, offering a salute in remembrance of the fallen. The event served as a poignant reminder of the importance of honoring and remembering those who have given their lives for our country.
