The Monmouth Civic Chorus recently announced the winners of its 2024 Vocal Scholarship Auditions, showcasing the incredible talent of young singers in the area. Maria Guerrero, a 17-year-old from Little Silver, took the first-place spot. Maria, a student at Red Bank Regional High School, has an impressive resume with over 38 musical theater productions under her belt and even appearing on the original off-Broadway cast recording of “CAMP, A New Musical.” She plans to pursue a major in theatre/directing in college.
Tying for second place were Olivia Crowe, 17, from Point Pleasant Beach, and Jacob Phelps, 19, from Helmetta. Olivia, a senior at Point Pleasant Beach High School, has been performing with Continuo Arts Foundation groups for eight years and released her first album, “Unfinished,” in 2023. She will be attending the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Jacob, a student at the Calais School, is a classically-trained baritone who has performed at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall. He plans to attend St. Joseph’s University.
Additionally, Bryan Reimertz, 18, from Red Bank, received an honorable mention. Bryan, a student at Middletown High School North, has participated in various choruses and even played Igor in the school’s production of “Young Frankenstein.” He is still undecided on his college choice.
The Monmouth Civic Chorus has a long history of supporting young talent, having awarded over $90,000 to 113 musically gifted high school seniors over the past 39 years. Artistic Director Ryan James Brandau leads the chorus, bringing his extensive experience in conducting choral and orchestral ensembles to the group. The future looks bright for these talented scholarship winners as they pursue their dreams in the world of music and theater.
