Former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial is off to a dramatic start in New York, with more than 50 prospective jurors being excused on Monday for stating they could not be fair and impartial in their judgment.
The trial, which centers around allegations that Trump covered up hush money payments to a porn star with whom he allegedly had an affair, saw 96 potential panelists assembled in a New York court for screening.
One prospective juror, a woman with short hair, bluntly stated, “I just couldn’t do it,” as she left the courtroom. Several others were excused after indicating they could not serve for various reasons.
Judge Juan Merchan revealed that there is a pool of up to 500 Manhattan residents from which the jury will be selected. The selection process includes questioning potential jurors about their affiliations with far-right groups associated with Trump.
With more than a dozen court officers present and Trump himself observing the proceedings, the selection of 12 jurors is expected to be a lengthy and challenging process. Trump’s lawyer anticipates it could take up to two weeks to finalize the jury.
Trump faces multiple criminal cases, including allegations of falsifying business records to cover up an extramarital encounter with adult film actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 election campaign. He also faces charges related to mishandling classified documents and attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
The trial promises to be a high-profile and contentious affair, with the former president’s legal troubles taking center stage once again.
