70 years ago, the dream of school integration was seen as a real possibility, but it remains unfulfilled.

Seventy years after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, American schools are still grappling with issues of segregation and inequality. Despite the Supreme Court ruling that separating children by race in schools is unconstitutional, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

In a country that is more diverse than ever, around 4 out of 10 Black and Hispanic students attend schools where almost every one of their classmates is another student of color. This intense segregation is often linked to socioeconomic conditions, with schools where students of color make up more than 90% of the student body being located in low-income areas.

Efforts to integrate schools have stalled over the years, with court cases chipping away at the dream outlined in Brown v. Board of Education. The arc of the moral universe does not seem to be bending towards justice in this case, as school integration remains more of an idea than a reality in America.

Despite the challenges, advocates like Ary Amerikaner and Saba Bireda are pushing for change through legal means. By leveraging state courts to obtain tools that the Supreme Court has taken away from districts, they hope to bridge the gap between funding and integration in schools.

As the country continues to grapple with issues of segregation and inequality in education, the work towards achieving the vision of Brown v. Board of Education remains unfinished.
