Essexville Garber Softball Team Wins Fourth Consecutive Bay County Championship
ESSEXVILLE, MI – Despite playing a different style of softball this season, the Essexville Garber Dukes continue to dominate on the field. In a thrilling match against Bay City Central, the Dukes secured a 6-2 victory to claim their fourth consecutive Bay County Softball Championship.
Transitioning from a team known for hitting home runs to one focused on base stealing, the Dukes faced uncertainty after graduating eight seniors from last year’s powerhouse team. With a roster featuring two freshmen and seven sophomores, the odds were stacked against Garber in defending their championship title.
However, the young team rose to the occasion, defeating Bay City All Saints and Bay City Western in pool play before clinching the title with a come-from-behind win over Central in the championship game. Coach Chris Kokaly praised his players for their talent and determination, highlighting their ability to adapt to a new style of play.
The game was a close battle, with Central taking a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning. But Garber rallied back, tying the game at 2-2 before a decisive sixth inning that saw the Dukes draw three consecutive walks and a clutch hit that cleared the bases.
Sophomore pitcher Kara Kotenko sealed the victory with a stellar 12-strikeout performance, showcasing the team’s depth and resilience. Despite a tough loss, Central put up a strong fight, with standout performances from Alivia Kukla and Katelyn Hemingway.
In the consolation games, Pinconning defeated Bay City Western 6-0 behind a no-hitter from Geena Gauthier, while John Glenn secured a 23-10 victory over All Saints. The Bay County Softball Championship showcased the talent and determination of local high school teams, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
