Abbeyglen (Glen) Fulford ’26, a student at Furman University, is making waves with her project “Colorful Connections” as part of the Capstone Scholars program at the Shucker Center for Leadership Development. Fulford is partnering with the Greenville Queer Wellness Center, a local non-profit that provides resources for the queer community, to create and lead a four-week curriculum that helps queer youth understand their identities through art.

Drawing on her background as a neuroscience major, Fulford is meticulously researching articles and meeting with professors to design a curriculum that will not only educate but also empower and inspire the participants. By using art as a medium for self-expression and exploration, Fulford hopes to make a meaningful impact on the lives of queer youth in the community.

The Capstone Scholars program at Furman University allows students like Fulford to pursue their passions, address important issues in the community, and develop their leadership skills. With the support of the Shucker Center, Fulford and her fellow Scholars are able to receive a $500 stipend to fund their projects and meet weekly to share progress, receive feedback, and hold each other accountable.

Fulford’s project is just one of five innovative and impactful initiatives being undertaken by Capstone Scholars this year. From creating a middle school readiness program to designing events to educate students about careers in education, these projects exemplify the dedication and leadership of Furman students.

While the Scholars are not required to continue their projects beyond the semester, they hope that the legacy of their work will endure through its impact on the community and inspire future student leaders at Furman University. Fulford’s “Colorful Connections” is a shining example of the creativity and commitment of Furman students in making a difference in the world around them.
