Rockwell Automation has released the findings of its 9th annual “State of Smart Manufacturing Report,” which surveyed over 1,500 manufacturers across 17 leading manufacturing countries. The report highlights a growing focus on leveraging new and emerging technologies to enhance resilience, improve quality, maximize workforce potential, and drive sustainable growth.

According to Cyril Perducat, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Rockwell Automation, a skilled workforce is essential for successful manufacturing operations. However, attracting, managing, and retaining workers remains a significant challenge. The survey emphasizes the importance of integrating technology into the organizational culture to remain competitive and drive business forward.

Key global findings from the report include the increasing adoption of AI, with 83% of manufacturers expecting to use generative AI in their operations by 2024. Additionally, 95% of manufacturers are currently using or evaluating smart manufacturing technology, with a focus on workforce development and repurposing workers for new roles.

Change management is identified as the primary workforce-related obstacle for manufacturers in 2024, while cybersecurity emerges as one of the top external risks. Energy management is highlighted as a critical factor for manufacturers’ sustainability programs.

Allison Kuhn, principal analyst at LNS Research, emphasizes the importance of developing a sustainable workforce strategy to address manufacturing challenges. Manufacturers are urged to prioritize the total employee experience, servant leadership, and connected frontline workforce applications to attract and retain talent.

Rockwell Automation aims to support manufacturers in aligning technology and talent with business objectives through its industry expertise and PartnerNetwork™. The company is dedicated to helping global manufacturers realize the value of digital transformation and overcome obstacles to long-term growth and resilience.
