San Diego sees surge in Hollywood movie and TV productions filming

Reading Time: < 1 minute

San Diego is quickly becoming a hotspot for some of the world’s biggest entertainment companies, with Disney, Warner Brothers, and Netflix all choosing America’s Finest City as the backdrop for their next projects. The city’s iconic beaches, city views, and natural landscapes are attracting Hollywood’s attention, making San Diego one of America’s premier filming destinations.

Guy Langman, the City’s Special Events and Filming manager, emphasized that San Diego offers the same picturesque outdoor locations as Los Angeles but without the congestion and high costs. With major companies like Warner Brothers filming in Downtown San Diego, the local economic impact is significant, with projects generating up to $1 million in economic activity in just one week.

As production studios seek ways to reduce costs, many are taking advantage of California’s generous tax credits. In March, the state’s Film Commission awarded a $1 million tax credit to an independent film titled “California Convergence,” set to film entirely in San Diego. This move highlights the city’s efforts to attract TV, film, and commercial companies by promoting itself as a film-friendly destination.

It’s not just feature films and TV shows that are flocking to San Diego; popular reality shows like “90-Day Fiance,” “The Bachelorette,” and “Married at First Sight” have also chosen the city as a filming location. The streamlined permitting process and lower fees compared to Los Angeles make San Diego an attractive option for reality TV production companies.

With its stunning scenery, cost-effective filming options, and efficient permitting process, San Diego is proving to be a top choice for entertainment industry giants looking to bring their projects to life.
