Martinsville City Council Tackles Health Insurance, Fitness Campaign, and More

During a series of meetings on Tuesday, March 26, members of Martinsville City Council covered a wide range of topics, including health insurance, a fitness campaign, and updates from various departments.

Human Resources Director Travis Hodge presented information on the city’s health insurance benefits, revealing that Anthem and Local Choice were the two providers who submitted quotes this year. Despite a trend of 10 percent increases in health insurance benefits, Anthem’s renewal rate remained unchanged, leading the health insurance committee to recommend retaining Anthem as the healthcare provider.

In addition to health insurance updates, City Manager Aretha Ferrell-Benavides shared exciting news about a fitness campaign aimed at promoting health and wellness in Martinsville. The city received a $40,000 grant for the campaign and is seeking additional funding to construct an outdoor fitness area. A 30-day fitness challenge, similar to “The Biggest Loser,” was announced to encourage residents to live healthier lifestyles.

Other highlights from the meetings included a presentation from Martinsville Police Chief Rob Fincher on fraudulent activity in the area, positive growth in various city funds reported by Director of Finance Mandy McGhee, and discussions on services provided by the Public Works and Water Resources departments.

The council also approved a consent agenda, welcomed a new deputy clerk in training, and recognized a resident’s 100th birthday and Martinsville’s designation as a Bee City.

Overall, the meetings were productive and showcased the city’s commitment to promoting health, wellness, and community engagement.
