Ukrainian Man Files Legal Complaint in Argentina Alleging Torture by Russian Forces
In a bold move to seek justice for alleged war crimes, a Ukrainian man has filed a legal complaint in Argentina against Russian occupying forces. The man, who remains anonymous for fear of reprisal against his family in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine, accuses specific individuals of torturing him using electrocution and unlawful imprisonment in mid to late 2022.
The victim, who spoke to Reuters ahead of filing the complaint, described the excruciating pain he endured during the torture, which led to him losing consciousness. Despite surviving the ordeal, he highlighted that many others are still suffering in similar conditions.
The legal complaint, spanning nearly 70 pages, includes testimony from other detainees at the same detention center corroborating the allegations. The man’s legal team, along with a Ukraine-based NGO, jointly filed the case, aiming to hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions.
If the Argentine court accepts the complaint, it would mark the first case outside of Europe and the United States looking into alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine. This move underscores the importance of universal jurisdiction in prosecuting individuals for war crimes and crimes against humanity, regardless of their location or nationality.
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office expressed support for the legal action, emphasizing the unprecedented challenge of addressing over 126,000 war crimes cases since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. By leveraging universal jurisdiction, Argentina continues its legacy of pursuing justice for victims of atrocities worldwide.
