India is pushing for decisive action on Security Council reform, advocating for an inclusive framework that accurately reflects the diverse global landscape of today. During the 6th round of intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, emphasized the need for expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories to achieve genuine reform.

Kamboj highlighted the widespread support for India’s position, with 113 out of 122 member states favoring expansion in both categories, as outlined in the 2015 framework document. She dismissed the idea of longer-term non-permanent seats, stating that it lacks support from the majority of member states.

India has long sought a permanent seat on the Security Council to better represent the interests of the developing world. The nation’s efforts have gained momentum with support from influential figures like Dennis Francis, who believes in India’s positive contribution to global peace and security. India has been a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for eight terms, totaling 16 years.

As a member of the G4 group of nations advocating for UNSC reform, India has been actively pushing for permanent membership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a visit to France in July 2023, emphasized the importance of India’s inclusion in the Security Council, stating that the UN body cannot claim to represent the world without the participation of the most populous country and the largest democracy.
