Trojans narrowly defeat Dunkirk in track & field competition

In a thrilling Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association track and field meet at Southwestern Central School, the Southwestern girls dominated Dunkirk with a score of 125-15. M’kenzie Zavala, Emma Lewis, Alexis Grijalva, and Katie Bishop were the standout performers for the Trojans, each claiming victory in two events.

Zavala showcased her skills by winning the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.8 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:15.2. Lewis excelled in the long-distance events, taking first place in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. Grijalva showed her speed by winning the 200 and 400 meters, while Bishop dominated the field in the long jump and triple jump.

Dunkirk’s lone victory came in the pole vault, with Felicity Cooper reaching a height of 7 feet, 6 inches. Despite the strong performance from Dunkirk, Southwestern’s depth and talent proved too much to overcome.

On the boys’ side, Southwestern secured a convincing win over Dunkirk with a score of 99-42. Neves Hoose was a standout performer for the Trojans, winning both the long jump and high jump. However, Dunkirk’s Nathan Carlson stole the show by claiming victory in the 100 and 200 meters with impressive times of 10.9 and 23.2 seconds, respectively.

Overall, it was a day of impressive performances and fierce competition at the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association track and field meet, with Southwestern emerging as the dominant force in both the girls’ and boys’ events.
