The Prince William County Board of Supervisors is facing a crucial decision that could potentially transform the sports tourism industry in the area. A proposed $140 million indoor sports complex along Telegraph Road in Woodbridge is on the table, with a deadline of May 18 for the board to make a decision.
County Parks and Recreation Department Director, Seth Hendler-Voss, believes that the complex could bring in an estimated $50 million in economic impact annually. Additionally, a report on the project suggests that the venue could attract around 500,000 visitors each year.
However, Board Chair Deshundra Jefferson has expressed concerns about the project, particularly regarding the potential increase in costs due to the proposed location. Jefferson pointed out that the county would need to purchase the site for the complex, driving up the overall cost.
The sports complex would offer hard-surface courts for basketball, pickleball, and space for conventions, as well as a hydraulic running track for track and field competitions. Student-athletes like Daniel Ainerua and Sidney Nolan from Patriot High School see the benefits of having a local sports complex, as it would reduce the burden of traveling long distances for competitions and allow parents to attend their events in person.
As the board weighs the pros and cons of the project, the decision could have a significant impact on the sports community in Prince William County and potentially boost the local economy through sports tourism.
