Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) is set to debut a groundbreaking new work titled “To Be a Horizon” by artistic advisor Derrick Skye. The world premiere will take place on Saturday, April 20 at Glendale’s Alex Theatre and on Sunday, April 21 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Skye’s composition is described as a fusion of various cultural musical practices within a western classical framework.

The concert will feature assistant concertmaster Tereza Stanislav and principal viola Yura Lee as soloists performing Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante” in E-flat major for violin and viola. The program will also include Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 4,” known for its celebratory and boundary-breaking nature.

“To Be a Horizon” combines elements of West African, Persian, Balkan, and Hindustani music, reflecting Skye’s diverse heritage. The composer aims to create a new American music aesthetic that embraces the country’s multicultural identity. The piece is part of a larger orchestral suite titled “Prisms, Cycles, Leaps,” which aims to bridge the gap between different music cultures.

Tickets for the event range from $32-142 and can be purchased online at laco.org or by contacting LACO directly. Discounted tickets are available for seniors and students. The performances will take place at the Alex Theatre in Glendale and Royce Hall in Los Angeles.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience a groundbreaking musical journey that celebrates diversity and innovation in classical music.
