New York City Public Schools are set to receive a significant boost in funding, with over $500 million being allocated to educational programs by the city. Mayor Eric Adams announced that the programs, which were previously supported by temporary stimulus dollars from the federal government, will now be sustained using a combination of city and state funds.
The $514 million investment will be distributed across various initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of education in the city. This includes $92 million for the expansion of citywide 3-K programs, $74 million for mental health support services in schools, and $56 million for special education pre-K providers. Additionally, funds will be allocated to Community Schools, career readiness programs, arts programming, literacy and dyslexia programs, and more.
In an effort to increase enrollment in 3-K and pre-K programs, the city will be investing an additional $5 million in outreach efforts. Mayor Adams emphasized the importance of ensuring that every seat in these programs is filled, particularly in areas with low enrollment rates. Furthermore, $25 million will be dedicated to special education classes for pre-K students, and $8 million will be invested in the MyCity portal to help New Yorkers access subsidized child care and other city services.
