Garbine Muguruza, the former world No.1 and two-time Grand Slam champion, has officially announced her retirement from the WTA Tour. The 30-year-old Spaniard made the decision after a string of disappointing performances, culminating in a first-round loss at the Lyon Open in January 2023.

In a press conference ahead of the Laureus Sports Awards, Muguruza expressed her gratitude for her tennis career, which saw her achieve major milestones such as winning Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the WTA Finals. Reflecting on her journey, Muguruza stated, “Tennis has given me a lot in this first part of my life. It has been a fantastic journey in which I have experienced unique situations.”

Despite bidding farewell to professional tennis, Muguruza hinted at staying connected to the sport post-retirement. She has already taken on the role of ambassador for the Laureus Sport for Good organization, aiming to help young people through sports.

Throughout her career, Muguruza amassed 10 titles and reached the pinnacle of the WTA rankings after winning the 2017 Wimbledon title. Her retirement marks the end of an era for women’s tennis, as fans and fellow players alike acknowledge her contributions to the sport.

While it is a bittersweet moment for fans of Muguruza, the tennis star seems content with her decision to start a new chapter in her life. As she closes this chapter on her tennis career, Muguruza leaves behind a legacy of success and sportsmanship that will be remembered for years to come.
