Residents in Hollywood, Florida, are falling victim to a disturbing Facebook Marketplace scam that has left them feeling vulnerable and frustrated. Bryan and Karla Bernet have been dealing with a constant stream of strangers showing up at their door, looking to pick up appliances they never advertised. The couple estimates that between 50 and 60 individuals have been duped by this elaborate scheme.
“We’re just wondering when’s the next person that’s going to come by here,” said Bryan Bernet. “It might be the one that one day becomes violent or aggressive.”
Despite their efforts to report the incidents to Facebook and local authorities, the scammers continue to operate with impunity. Another Broward family, the Vazquezes, found themselves in a similar predicament when their vehicle was vandalized after being falsely listed for rent on Facebook Marketplace.
Robert Vazquez recounted how two men showed up at his door looking for keys to a car they claimed to have rented through the platform. When his son refused to hand over the keys, the men left empty-handed, only to return later with accomplices who proceeded to damage the vehicle.
Local 10 News has exposed this ongoing issue and is urging residents to remain vigilant. The Broward Sheriff’s Office and Hollywood police are actively investigating the matter, but the fake advertisements persist on Facebook.
