The No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis men’s tennis team secured a thrilling 5-4 victory over Division II’s 18th-ranked McKendree University on Monday, April 22. This win marked WashU’s second consecutive triumph over the Bearcats, following last year’s 6-1 victory. With this result, WashU’s record improved to 11-9, while McKendree’s record dropped to 14-3.
In the doubles matches, WashU took a 2-1 lead with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Senior Gaurav Singh and sophomore Colin Fox claimed an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Eric Kuo and junior Scott Yamamoto secured an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Despite a close match, sophomore Case Fagan and junior Pato Garcia Muriel narrowly lost at No. 3 doubles.
Moving on to singles play, Singh dominated his match at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Sophomore Colin Scruggs and junior Pato Garcia Muriel also contributed singles victories at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions, respectively. However, WashU faced losses at the No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 singles positions.
Looking ahead, the Bears are gearing up for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Altamonte Springs, Florida. As the four-seed, WashU will face off against the five-seed, No. 25 Carnegie Mellon University, in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, April 25 at 8:30 a.m. ET. This tournament will be a crucial test for WashU as they aim to continue their winning streak and make a strong statement in the UAA Championship.
