Pierce County Secures Hosting Rights for High School State Championships Through 2028
In a major win for the local economy and the proud residents of the 253 area code, Pierce County has secured hosting rights for several important high school athletics state championship events through 2028. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) recently announced that Pierce County venues will host state basketball, wrestling, soccer, and track-and-field championships for the next four years.
After a competitive bidding process, the WIAA selected Tacoma and Pierce County as the ideal locations to host these prestigious events. The Tacoma Dome will continue to host Washington State’s Class 3A-4A high school basketball and 1A-4A wrestling championships, while Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma will host girls’ soccer championships and track and field championships for 1A and 2A schools. Additionally, Sparks Stadium in Puyallup will host the 3A and 4A girls’ soccer championships.
The decision to keep these events in Pierce County is expected to have a significant economic impact, with an estimated $10.3 million in revenue generated annually. Tens of thousands of athletes and spectators from around the state are expected to attend these championships, providing a boost to local businesses and communities.
Officials from Travel Tacoma and Tacoma Venues & Events expressed their excitement about retaining these events, highlighting the positive impact they have on the region. Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards also welcomed the news, emphasizing the city’s commitment to fostering athletic excellence and showcasing Tacoma as a premier destination for top-tier competition.
