Central women secure victory in road tennis tournament in the league

The Central College women’s tennis team secured a 5-3 victory over Wartburg College in the American Rivers Conference tournament quarterfinals, thanks to a strong performance in doubles play. The Dutch team, with a 10-11 record, will now advance to the semifinals for the 11th consecutive year, facing off against No. 1 Luther College on Thursday.

Central College got off to a great start with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Becca Vala and Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney claimed an 8-3 victory at No. 2, while Jennifer Larson and Madi Whalen secured an 8-2 win at No. 3. Head coach Ferrell praised the teamwork and strategy of the doubles pairs, highlighting their strengths on the court.

In singles play, Mahoney and Vala continued their winning streak, with Mahoney winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and Vala dominating with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4. Emma Murphy clinched the deciding fifth point for Central with a comeback win at No. 5 singles, while Lauren Gano’s match at No. 6 remained unfinished.

Looking ahead to the semifinals against Luther College, Ferrell acknowledged the tough competition but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete. Despite a previous loss to Luther earlier in the season, the Dutch team is determined to put up a fight and see how they fare in the upcoming match.
