Actor Glen Powell has opened up about the success of his romantic-comedy film “Anyone But You” and the dating rumors surrounding him and his co-star Sydney Sweeney. Powell, 35, credited their on-screen chemistry and fun camaraderie for the film’s success, which grossed over USD 200 million worldwide.
The film, loosely based on Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”, received mixed reviews but gained attention for Powell and Sweeney’s pairing. Rumors of a real-life romance between the two sparked when Powell split from his girlfriend and Sweeney remained engaged to her fiance Jonathan Davino, who also served as an executive producer on the film.
Powell emphasized the importance of fun and chemistry in selling a rom-com, stating, “Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully.”
Sweeney, 26, who also produced the film through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner, revealed her involvement in the marketing strategy, ensuring active engagement with the audience. She expressed her dedication to creating a dialogue with viewers during the promotion of the film.
“Anyone But You” follows the story of Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) who pretend to be a couple at a destination wedding in Australia for mutual benefit. The film was released in theaters in December and is now streaming on Netflix.
The duo’s on-screen chemistry and off-screen camaraderie have undoubtedly contributed to the film’s success, leaving fans eager to see more of their dynamic in future projects.
