Cal Poly men’s tennis team is gearing up for the 2024 Big West Championships in San Diego, starting on Friday, April 26. After a tough loss to The University of Hawai’i in last year’s tournament, the Mustangs are looking to make a strong comeback this year.

With a regular season record of 9-9 and 4-2 in Big West play, the Mustangs have shown promise leading up to the championship tournament. Despite facing challenges like rain delays and shutout wins, the team has remained resilient throughout the season.

Junior player Bastiaan Weststrate has been a standout performer for the Mustangs, winning nine out of his eighteen matches and helping secure the team’s No. 3 seed in the tournament. Additionally, redshirt senior Colter Smith has been a key player in the doubles matches, only suffering two losses while playing alongside Weststrate.

Freshman Sean Kamyshev has also made a significant impact, winning 10 out of his 18 singles matches and forming a strong doubles pairing with fellow freshman Raz Haviv.

As the tournament kicks off, the Mustangs will face UC Riverside in the first-round quarterfinals. With tough competition from teams like UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara, who they lost to in conference play, the Mustangs have a challenging road ahead. However, with their strong performances throughout the season, there is a chance we may see them emerge victorious at the end of the Big West Championship.
