The concept of the Blue Zones, areas around the world where people live the longest and healthiest lives, has been gaining popularity recently. Thanks to Dan Buettner, the founder of Blue Zones and host of the hit Netflix show “Live to 100,” more people are discovering the secrets to longevity found in places like Ikaria, Greece; Sardinia, Italy; Loma Linda, California; Okinawa, Japan; and the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica.

Recently, I had the opportunity to join Dan Buettner for the opening weekend of Silvestre Hotel & Residences in Nosara, Costa Rica, a town located on the Nicoya Peninsula. Buettner, who has nicknamed Nosara the “gateway destination” to the Blue Zone villages in the mountains, was hosting a series of events to highlight the longevity lessons from this region.

One of the key factors contributing to the longevity of the Nicoya Peninsula residents is the environment. Buettner emphasized that it’s not necessarily superior genes that lead to long life, but rather an environment that promotes healthy choices. The dry climate of Guanacaste, the remote location, and the rich drinking water all play a role in supporting longevity.

While living in Costa Rica may not be feasible for everyone, there are valuable lessons from the Nicoya Blue Zone that can be applied anywhere. Here are some key takeaways from my time with Dan Buettner:

1. Incorporate the “Three Sisters” into your diet: The combination of squash, beans, and corn, known as the “Three Sisters,” provides a complete protein and essential nutrients. Including these foods in your diet can support overall health and longevity.

2. Work natural movement into your day: Nicoyans stay active through daily activities like farming and walking. Incorporating movement into your daily routine, such as taking the stairs or walking instead of driving, can have a positive impact on your health.

3. Adopt a “plan de vida” mentality: Having a sense of purpose and a daily mission, as seen in the Nicoya Peninsula, can contribute to longevity. Finding your “why” and structuring your day around it can lead to a fulfilling and healthy life.

4. Get some (sensible) sun: Regular sun exposure can help the body produce vitamin D, which is essential for overall health. Spending time outdoors and getting sunlight in moderation can have numerous health benefits.

5. Embrace a more communal lifestyle: Building strong social connections and fostering a sense of community, as seen in Nosara, can improve physical health and increase longevity. Investing in relationships and staying connected with others can have a positive impact on your well-being.
