Dubai Police Crack Down on Begging, Street Vending, and Illegal Labour During Ramadan Campaign

In a concerted effort to combat begging, street vending, and illegal labour, the Criminal Investigation Department at Dubai Police, along with police stations across the emirate, has successfully apprehended 967 individuals since the launch of the Ramadan campaign “Combat Begging”.

The arrests include 396 beggars, 292 street vendors, and 279 illegal workers, highlighting the widespread nature of these negative phenomena in the community.

Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi, Director of the Suspicious Persons and Criminal Phenomena Department of the General Department of Criminal Investigations in Dubai Police, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the dangers associated with these activities, particularly during Ramadan and festive seasons.

“Beggars and street vendors often exploit these times to evoke sympathy and solicit donations, posing a real threat to community safety. It is crucial for the public to donate through official and trustworthy channels to ensure that aid reaches those in genuine need,” Al Shamsi stated.

The presence of beggars, street vendors, and illegal workers not only jeopardizes community security but also tarnishes the state’s image. These activities are sometimes linked to more serious crimes such as theft, pickpocketing, and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals, including children and the sick.

Al Shamsi urged the public to refrain from engaging with beggars or illegal workers and instead report any observed instances to the authorities promptly. Citizens can report beggars through the contact center (901) or via the “Police Eye” service on the Dubai Police smart app. Additionally, the e-Crime service allows for the seamless reporting of cybercrimes through www.ecrime.ae.

The campaign “Combat Begging” serves as a reminder for individuals to distribute alms and zakat through approved charitable organizations, ensuring that their donations reach those who are truly deserving. By supporting official channels, the public can contribute to maintaining community safety and upholding the state’s reputation.

As the crackdown on begging, street vending, and illegal labour continues, Dubai Police remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of residents and visitors alike. Through collaborative efforts with law enforcement agencies and community members, the emirate aims to create a safer and more secure environment for all.
