The Dunkirk City School District is gearing up for a major capital project that could transform the athletic fields and facilities in the area. LaBella engineering firm presented renderings of the proposed renovations, which include new lights and playing surfaces for the baseball and softball fields.

The project will be split into three propositions and added to the district budget vote in May. Proposition Two is the most extensive, costing $53.3 million, and includes renovations to the junior/senior high school, track, football field, auditorium, cafeteria, and media center. Proposition Three, costing $5.3 million, will add lighting to the baseball and softball fields and tennis courts, as well as resurfacing with synthetic turf. Proposition Four, with a cost of $24.9 million, aims to install air conditioning in all district classrooms.

Superintendent Michael Mansfield emphasized the importance of Proposition Two passing before the other propositions can be enacted. The district plans to use a capital reserve to fund the projects, and Propositions Two and Three will not result in a tax increase for voters. However, Proposition Four could lead to a 1.2% tax hike.

Construction is expected to take about six years, from 2025-31, with the goal of enhancing security and creating more space for teaching. District voters will have the opportunity to vote on all three propositions during the annual budget and Board of Education vote on May 21.
