Mizoram, known for its stunning landscapes and rich flora and fauna, saw a significant increase in tourist footfall in the year 2023. According to the state Tourism department, over 1,96,000 tourists, including foreigners, visited the north-eastern state last year.

Out of the total number of tourists, 1,93,445 were domestic travelers, while 3,435 were foreigners. Americans topped the list of foreign tourists with 1,162 visitors, followed by tourists from countries like Japan, Australia, Israel, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The tourist footfall in Mizoram has been steadily increasing, with over 2.22 lakh tourists visiting in 2022-23, compared to 2.18 lakh domestic tourists and 3,551 foreigners in the previous year. This growth is a positive sign for the state’s tourism industry, which saw a decline in tourist numbers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mizoram offers a range of tourist attractions, including the highest hilltop in the state, Reiek Tlang, Vantawng Falls, Phawngpui peak, and several wildlife sanctuaries. The state’s ‘responsible’ tourism policy, implemented in 2020, aims to promote sustainable development and provide livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Foreign tourists no longer need a Protected Area Permit to visit Mizoram, except for those from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China. However, all foreign visitors are required to report to the Foreigner Registration Office in Aizawl within 24 hours of their arrival.

With its natural beauty and diverse attractions, Mizoram continues to attract tourists from around the world, contributing to the state’s growing tourism industry.
