Travel and Tourism Industry Set to Create 60 Million New Jobs

The travel and tourism sector in India is set to experience a significant boom in the coming years, with a projected addition of 58.2 million jobs by 2033. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the industry has shown remarkable growth and resilience, contributing significantly to the country’s economy.

According to a report by the global technology and digital talent solutions provider NBL Services, talent demand in the travel sector saw a spike of 44 per cent in August last year. This surge in demand is expected to continue, with job roles such as sales, business development, chefs, travel consultants, tour operators, wildlife experts, and transportation providers experiencing year-on-year increases.

The travel and tourism sector is a vital source of foreign exchange for India, contributing Rs 15.9 trillion ($191.25 billion) to the economy in 2022. This contribution is expected to grow further, reaching Rs 16.5 trillion in 2023.

From a geographical perspective, the top five states attracting domestic tourists include Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. In terms of cities, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Kochi are driving the increase in hiring, with tier two cities like Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh also showing promise.

The industry is also witnessing a rise in startups, with close to 1500 companies providing platforms for travel services. These startups offer solutions for planning and booking travel services, catering to the evolving needs of travelers in the digital age.

Overall, the future looks bright for the travel and tourism sector in India, with a promising outlook for job creation and economic growth in the years to come.
