Gateway High School’s girls’ tennis team is making waves as they head to the FHSAA State Championship after a historic win in the Region 7 Final. The team’s number two doubles duo, Anisa and Zulaika Hanfi, clinched a dramatic victory against South Fork’s Olivia DeGaetano and Aria Kaul, securing a 4-3 win for the Panthers.

This victory marks Gateway’s first-ever regional win, propelling them to the state tournament at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs. With a record of 11-2, the Panthers are set to face off against tough competition in the upcoming matches.

Coach Jeremiah Swartz expressed pride in his senior players, noting that four of the top five players have been playing together for years. The team’s depth and experience have been key factors in their success, with seniors Anaila and Aurelia Cooks leading the charge in both singles and doubles matches.

In addition to Gateway, Celebration High School is also sending athletes to the state championships. Valeria Lopez, Celebration’s top singles player, secured a district championship and will compete in the individual tournament. The school’s number one doubles team of Lopez and freshman Diana Perez will also represent the Storm at the state level.

While Celebration fell short of making the state tournament as a team, their impressive performances throughout the season highlight the talent and dedication of the players. As both Gateway and Celebration gear up for the state championships, tennis fans can expect thrilling matches and fierce competition on the courts.
