Cleveland Clinic Surgeons Utilize New Technology to Preserve Livers for Transplant
CLEVELAND CLINIC – Organ donations are a critical aspect of saving lives, and every second counts when it comes to preserving organs for transplant. Cleveland Clinic surgeons are now utilizing new technology to help preserve livers before they are transplanted, revolutionizing the process.
Dr. David Reich, the surgical director of the liver transplant program for Cleveland Clinic Florida, explained the limitations of traditional ice storage for organs. He stated, “Ice storage is not the healthiest way of sustaining an organ that’s going to be transplanted. The new machine perfusion technologies that we have keep the organ somewhat alive between the donor and the recipient.”
By using perfusion methods, surgeons can pump oxygenated blood or solution through a donor’s liver outside the body. This process not only improves the quality of the organ but also allows for a better examination to determine if the liver is healthy enough for transplantation or if further rejuvenation is needed.
Research has shown that perfusion has helped reduce the risk of complications for patients undergoing liver transplants. Dr. Reich emphasized the positive outcomes of using this new technology, stating, “Patients have better results, go home from the hospital sooner, experience fewer complications, and have better safety during the transplant process.”
