Supporting Advocacy for Prostate Cancer through Lifestyle Changes

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Major Richard Reese, a member of the support group Brothers United Against Prostate Cancer, shared his journey of being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015 and how he has navigated the challenges that come with it. Speaking at a virtual forum hosted by Wellness Men Mastery, Reese emphasized the importance of support, diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes in mitigating the effects of the diagnosis.

Reese highlighted the impact of his diagnosis on his perspective on life and the importance of being diligent with annual medical check-ups. He shared that since leaving the military, he has made significant lifestyle changes, including adopting a healthier diet and becoming a part of a support group. Through his experience, Reese has influenced around 50 individuals to either get tested or proceed with intervention for prostate issues.

The support group member stressed the significance of men opening up about their health concerns and seeking help when needed. He noted that many men do not take action until they hear about someone they know being treated for a similar condition. Reese emphasized the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, regardless of one’s current health status, to ensure a better quality of life.

Reese shared his own lifestyle changes, including reducing alcohol consumption, red meat, and starch, and incorporating more fish, vegetables, fruits, grains, and water into his diet. He also highlighted the importance of staying hydrated and finding ways to manage stress effectively. With the hormone injections he is receiving, Reese mentioned the need to be rigorous with his exercise regime to maintain muscle tone.

One of the key aspects Reese mentioned is the importance of finding ways to relax and reduce stress. He recommended walking as a beneficial form of exercise, preferably with a group, at least three to four times a week. Reese emphasized the connection between exercise, sleep quality, and overall health, noting that poor sleep can indicate underlying health issues.

In conclusion, Major Richard Reese’s journey with prostate cancer serves as a reminder of the importance of support, lifestyle changes, and proactive health management in dealing with a diagnosis. His advocacy for men to open up about their health concerns and seek help when needed highlights the significance of early detection and intervention in managing prostate cancer. Reese’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, adaptation, and community support in facing life’s challenges head-on.
