Two years after a leaked draft of a US Supreme Court opinion signalled a dramatic shift in the nation’s abortion landscape, the issue continues to dominate courts, legislatures, and political campaigns, impacting lives across the country.

In a significant development, a ban on abortion after the first six weeks of pregnancy, before many women even realize they are pregnant, has taken effect in Florida, mirroring laws in two other states. Meanwhile, Arizona lawmakers voted to repeal a total ban on abortion dating back to 1864, and the Kansas Legislature increased funding for anti-abortion centers.

The status of abortion laws varies widely across states, with 14 states currently enforcing bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy, with limited exceptions. On the other hand, Democratic-led states have been working to preserve or expand access to abortion.

Despite the changes in laws and court rulings, studies have shown that the number of monthly abortions nationally remains the same or has even increased since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. Voters have consistently supported abortion rights advocates on statewide ballot measures.

The emotional debate surrounding abortion rights has intensified, with activists on both sides pushing their agendas. The issue has also become a focal point in the upcoming presidential election, with President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump taking opposing stances on the matter.

As the nation grapples with the evolving landscape of abortion laws, individuals like Amanda Zurawski, who faced a life-threatening situation due to restrictions on abortion access, have become vocal advocates for reproductive rights. The fight for justice and the protection of women’s healthcare rights continue to be at the forefront of the national conversation.
