The federal government has announced a significant investment of $104.34 million to support the city of Toronto in hosting six matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and federal Sports Minister Carla Qualtrough revealed the funding at Toronto’s BMO Field, the venue for the matches.
Toronto is anticipating a total cost of $380 million to host the 48-team soccer tournament, with the federal government’s contribution playing a crucial role in making the event possible. In February, the provincial government had pledged $97 million for the World Cup, contingent on matching funds from Ottawa.
Minister Qualtrough emphasized the unifying power of FIFA 2026, stating that it will bring the country together like never before. She highlighted the rare collaboration between all levels of government for the event, showcasing the impact of sports in uniting communities.
Mayor Chow expressed gratitude for the federal support, noting that the funds will cover operational and capital expenses for the Toronto matches. The investment is expected to create over 3,500 jobs, attract 300,000 visitors, and generate significant economic benefits for the city and province.
In addition to Toronto, Vancouver will also host matches as part of the North American joint bid with the U.S. and Mexico. The total cost for Vancouver to host seven games has been estimated at $581 million, reflecting the scale and economic impact of the prestigious tournament.
With preparations underway and funding secured, Toronto and Vancouver are gearing up to welcome soccer fans from around the world for an unforgettable FIFA World Cup experience in 2026.
