Arizona Women’s Tennis Ends Season with Tough Loss to Oklahoma in NCAA Championships
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Arizona Women’s Tennis team wrapped up their 2023-24 season with a hard-fought battle against No. 18 Oklahoma in the first round of the NCAA Championships at the College Station regional site. Unfortunately, the Wildcats fell short, losing 4-0 to the Sooners.
The day started off on a positive note for Arizona as the duo of Reece Carter and Brandelyn Fulgenzi secured a quick doubles victory on court one, defeating their opponents 6-1. However, Oklahoma fought back and managed to claim a win of their own in doubles play.
The match ultimately came down to court three, where Oklahoma’s Ava Catanzarite and Florencia Urrutia edged out Teja Tirunelveli and Kayla Wilkins to secure the doubles point for the Sooners.
In singles competition, Oklahoma continued their strong performance, with Julia Garcia Ruiz, Emma Staker, and Alina Shcherbinina clinching wins for the team. Shcherbinina’s victory on court three sealed the deal for Oklahoma, as they advanced to the next round of the NCAA Championships.
Despite the tough loss, Arizona finishes the season with a respectable 17-13 overall record. The Wildcats showed great determination and skill throughout the season, and will no doubt come back even stronger in the next season.
