Ukrainians in the embattled east celebrated Easter on Sunday amidst the looming threat of Russian troops advancing towards key cities in the region. Despite the escalating conflict, residents in Kostiantynivka remained determined to mark the holiday.

Natalia Hryhorieva, 58, expressed her resolve, stating, “We came in 2022 and in 2023, and we’ll come again.” The sound of cannon fire served as a grim backdrop during the early-morning mass, where the priest led prayers for Ukraine’s victory and denounced the “godless” enemy.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in an Easter message from Kyiv, called for unity in prayer for both civilians and soldiers on the front line. Kostiantynivka, a key city in the Donetsk region, could be the next major target for Russian forces if Chasiv Yar falls, analysts warned.

Meanwhile, Russian troops claimed to have captured the village of Ocheretyne, prompting concerns of further escalation. Governor Vadym Filashkin reported at least two casualties in the past 24 hours due to shelling across the region.

As the conflict rages on, Ukrainian troops behind the front line sought solace in Easter celebrations. Chaplain Yevhen Savchenko toured temporary bases to hold mass and bless the weary soldiers, providing a moment of respite from the ongoing battle.

Despite the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces, the spirit of Easter brought a sense of hope and inspiration amidst the turmoil. Troops enjoyed traditional Easter pastries and expressed their longing to celebrate with their families back home.
