Lakeview Girls Basketball Coach Named Coach of the Year
COTTONWOOD — The Lakeview girls basketball team had a remarkable season under the leadership of head coach Mike Imes, who was recently named Coach of the Year by the Independent. The Lakers, coming off a five-win season with just one senior on the roster, defied expectations and finished with a 17-11 record this year.
Imes attributed the team’s success to their competitive spirit and determination to improve. Despite falling short of their goal to reach the Camden Conference Championship, the Lakers achieved a top-4 seed in their subsection and reached the subsection semifinals. They also avenged last year’s loss to Dawson-Boyd in the subsection play-in round by defeating them in the quarterfinals this year.
The Lakers’ turnaround can be credited to their hard work and dedication both on and off the court. Imes emphasized the importance of team unity and playing to their strengths, particularly their frenetic press defense. The players also participated in a 10,000-shot club over the summer to improve their skills and shooting abilities.
Senior Shelby Justesen had a standout season, leading the team with confidence and focus. Imes praised her performance and noted that the team’s returning players will need to step up next season to fill her shoes.
Looking ahead, Imes is optimistic about the team’s future and the potential for continued success. With a strong core of returning players and a dedicated coaching staff, the Lakers are already planning for summer training and preparing to build on their achievements from this season.
Overall, the Lakers’ impressive turnaround under Coach Imes’ guidance serves as a testament to their hard work, resilience, and commitment to excellence on the basketball court.
