Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced former movie mogul, was returned to Rikers Island jail after a brief stay at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. The move came after a report claimed he was receiving VIP treatment during his hospital stay.
Weinstein’s publicist, Juda Engelmeyer, denied the allegations of preferential treatment, stating that Weinstein was housed on the same floor as other inmates with access to phones and a television room. Engelmeyer attributed Weinstein’s return to Rikers to pressure following the news report.
Weinstein had been transferred to Bellevue Hospital from the Mohawk Correctional Facility after his conviction was vacated by the New York Court of Appeals. The appeals court ordered a new trial, citing the judge’s allowance of irrelevant evidence during the initial trial. Despite this, Weinstein remained in custody due to a separate conviction in Los Angeles.
While prosecutors have requested a retrial in September for charges of sexual assault, it is unclear if key witnesses will participate. Weinstein has consistently denied the allegations against him.
Weinstein’s health issues, including pneumonia and heart troubles, were cited as reasons for his hospitalization. Despite his disappointment at returning to Rikers, Weinstein’s spirits are reportedly up following the appeals ruling.
As he faces a long road ahead with multiple legal battles, Weinstein remains in custody with his health closely monitored by jail and health officials.
