Rudy Gobert Wins Fourth NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award
Minnesota Timberwolves centre Rudy Gobert made history on Tuesday by winning his fourth NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, matching the league record. The 31-year-old Frenchman previously won the award in 2018, 2019, and 2021 while playing for the Utah Jazz.
Gobert was a key player for the T-Wolves this season, helping them become the NBA’s top-ranked defensive team. His stellar performance on the court earned him 72 first-place votes from a media panel, securing his place as the Defensive Player of the Year once again.
The 7-foot-1 star missed a playoff game to be with his girlfriend, Julia Bonilla, who gave birth to their son, Romeo, on the same day. Despite missing the game, Gobert expressed his gratitude for the blessings in his life.
Timberwolves coach Chris Finch praised Gobert for driving the team’s defensive culture and instilling the importance of defense in his teammates. Gobert credited the team’s success to their collective effort and mindset towards dominating defensively.
Gobert, who was traded to Minnesota from Utah in 2022, became the first T-Wolves player to win the Defensive Player of the Year award. He remains focused on helping his team achieve their ultimate goal of winning a championship.
With his impressive defensive skills and leadership on the court, Gobert continues to make a significant impact in the NBA and is set to represent France at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
