Woman from Mattawa area discovers extraordinary find in North Bay

A chicken farmer near Mattawa was left in awe after discovering an ‘eggstraordinary’ surprise in her hen house. Melinda Groen was shocked when her husband found an egg close to three times the size of a normal large chicken egg.

The egg, weighing a whopping 152 grams, was a rare find that left the couple amazed. Groen cracked open the egg on Tuesday morning and found a second egg fully intact inside, along with the yolk.

Describing the find as a “little bit cloudy,” Groen decided to give the first egg to her dog, jokingly calling it a “dog egg.” However, she is looking forward to trying the second egg, which she believes will be delicious.

This unusual phenomenon, known as counter-peristalsis contraction, occurs when a formed egg travels backward in a hen’s oviduct and becomes embedded inside a second egg early in its development.

Groen, a former dairy farmer, has had experience with large eggs before but never anything quite like this. She is now in a friendly competition with a chicken farmer friend to see who can produce the largest egg.

While Groen may not hold the Ontario record for the largest egg, she is thrilled with her find and is narrowing down the potential hen responsible for this ‘eggstraordinary’ discovery.
