The Philip Barbour Colts secured an 11-4 victory over the Elkins Tigers in a Class AA, Region II, Section 1 showdown on Tuesday night. Freshman Landyn Carpenter was the standout player of the game, driving in three runs to lead his team to victory.
The Colts got off to a strong start with Carpenter’s RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning, giving them an early 1-0 lead. They extended their lead in the second inning with four more runs, including a two-run double from Carpenter.
Elkins fought back in the third inning with Lincoln Scott’s two-run single, but the Colts pulled away with a five-run outburst in the sixth inning. Kent Rowan, Nick Gonzales, and Jacob Gray all contributed with RBIs to secure the win for Philip Barbour.
Pitcher Albert Gonzales went the distance for the Colts, striking out eight batters and walking only two. Elkins struggled to contain the Colts’ offense, with Scott taking the loss after giving up five runs in the first two innings.
Philip Barbour improved to 14-10 with the win and will now face off against Lincoln in their next game. Elkins, on the other hand, will play in an elimination game on Thursday after their loss to the Colts.
In Monday’s game against Liberty, the Tigers secured a 5-3 victory with Scott leading the offense with three RBIs. Ethan Humphrey earned the win on the mound, with Scott coming in to collect the save. The Tigers will look to bounce back in their next game after their loss to Philip Barbour.
