The World Boxing Council made a shocking decision to strip middleweight champion Jermall Charlo of his title after he was arrested for driving while intoxicated, fleeing the scene of an accident, and eluding police. The incident occurred on Monday, leading to Charlo’s title being revoked by the WBC.

In response to the situation, the WBC released a statement expressing their support for Charlo during this difficult time, particularly in terms of mental wellness. They also mentioned the possibility of ranking Charlo in the super middleweight division in the future.

Carlos Adames has been named as the new champion in the middleweight division following Charlo’s removal. Charlo had not defended his title since June 2021, while Adames had become the interim champion in October 2022.

According to reports, Charlo’s blood alcohol content was found to be well over the legal limit at 0.15. After being released on a $9,500 bond by the Pearland Police Department in Texas, Charlo’s attorney expressed optimism for a positive resolution to the situation.

The 33-year-old boxer was involved in a collision with another vehicle while driving his red Lamborghini, leading to a verbal argument and his subsequent attempt to evade the police. Charlo was eventually stopped after driving for approximately one mile, with officers determining that he had impaired mental and physical faculties.

Charlo, with a career record of 33-0-0 (22 KOs), now faces uncertainty in his boxing career following this troubling incident.
