In a heartbreaking loss, the 28th-ranked Washington and Lee men’s tennis team saw their 2023-24 season come to an end with a 5-2 defeat against No. 13 Sewanee in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament.
The Generals came into the match looking to avenge an earlier 8-1 loss to the Tigers in the regular season. They got off to a strong start, taking a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins from Eli Hirshberg and James Kurani at No. 3, and a thrilling 8-7 (9-7) victory from Josh Rassin and Heys Parker at No. 2.
However, Sewanee fought back in singles play, claiming victories at Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 2 to complete the comeback. The Tigers’ Quinn Wicklund, Gil Weston, Talman Ramsey, and Peyton Erck all secured straight-set wins to seal the victory.
Despite the loss, junior Evan Erb and first-year Heys Parker went unfinished in singles play, showing their determination and fight until the end.
With this defeat, the Generals’ team play for the season comes to a close. However, there is still hope for individual success as Evan Erb has been selected as the first alternate for the Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championship in St. Louis.
Washington and Lee University, nestled in the mountains of Virginia, has a proud tradition of athletic excellence and academic achievement. With over 500 student-athletes in 24 varsity sports, the Generals continue to uphold their legacy of success in the competitive world of collegiate sports.
