US Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised concerns on Sunday about Israel’s lack of a “credible plan” to protect the 1.4 million Palestinian civilians in Rafah. He warned that an Israeli attack could lead to an insurgency if Hamas fighters are not completely eliminated in the southern Gazan city.
Blinken’s comments came during interviews with NBC and CBS News, where he discussed President Joe Biden’s decision to pause a shipment of bombs to Israel over fears of civilian casualties in Rafah. He also mentioned a State Department report that suggested Israel’s use of US-supplied arms may have violated international law.
The planned invasion of Rafah by Israel has strained relations between the country and its main ally. Blinken emphasized the need for Israel to have a clear plan to protect civilians in Rafah, where most residents have been displaced by the ongoing conflict.
He also highlighted the importance of developing a post-war plan for the security, governance, and reconstruction of Gaza. Blinken stated that the United States is working with Arab governments and others on such a plan to ensure that Hamas does not regain control of the region.
The death toll in Israel’s military operation in Gaza has surpassed 35,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. The conflict was sparked by a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, resulting in casualties on both sides.
Blinken’s remarks underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to safeguard civilians and promote stability in the region amid escalating tensions.
