Amy Subaey, a Minnesota native who found herself unexpectedly unemployed in Dubai during the Covid pandemic, turned her passion for hiking into a successful business venture. Subaey, who had previously started a weekend hiking group in Dubai, decided to focus on UAE Trekkers after losing her job in 2020. The business has since gained a following of 30,000 on social media and has guided hikes for over 60,000 people.
Subaey, now 55 years old, leads treks around the stunning landscapes surrounding Dubai, including Hatta, Sharjah, Fujairah, and even Snake Canyon in Oman. She offers specialized hikes, such as a sunset trek across the Liwa desert in Abu Dhabi, which was used as a filming location for “Dune Part Two.”
One of Subaey’s main goals with UAE Trekkers is to get people out of the city and into nature, allowing them to experience the beauty of the UAE’s natural landscapes. She emphasizes the peace and refreshment that comes from being outdoors and disconnecting from everyday stresses.
In addition to providing guided hikes, UAE Trekkers focuses on inclusivity and education. Subaey ensures that all hikes are led by female guides and employs educators and mothers to cater to all levels of hikers. The business takes a “student-centered” approach, focusing on removing competition and creating a welcoming environment for all participants.
Beginners are educated on the essentials of hiking, including proper gear, hydration, and safety measures. Certified guides provide coaching on preparation, emergency response, and information about the local flora, fauna, and culture. Guests pay for specialized hikes that include snacks, juice, and equipment, with beginner walks lasting around three hours.
What sets UAE Trekkers apart is the sense of community it fosters among participants. Subaey highlights the diverse group of hikers, including tourists, residents, and visitors, who come together to connect with nature and each other. The multiculturalism of Dubai adds to the experience, allowing trekkers to meet people from all over the world.
Looking ahead, Subaey plans to expand her business by opening a hiking retreat in Lima. She is passionate about showcasing the raw beauty of Dubai and seeing the joy on people’s faces when they experience the stunning views the region has to offer.
Through UAE Trekkers, Amy Subaey has not only found a new career path but has also created a community that celebrates nature, inclusivity, and the joy of exploration. Her story is a testament to the power of following one’s passion and turning challenges into opportunities for growth and connection.
