A Family’s Journey to Rochester: Seeking Better Opportunities and Education

Rochester, a city known for its potential and opportunities, has become a beacon of hope for many families seeking a better life. One such family is that of a program manager at Olmsted County and an organizational development consultant, who shared their story of coming to Rochester in search of a brighter future.

Originally from a country where human rights abuses, especially for women, were prevalent, the family decided to make the move to Rochester to be closer to relatives and to provide better opportunities for their children. The decision was also influenced by the excellent education system in Rochester, which prepared their boys for college and beyond.

Despite the positive aspects of Rochester, the family acknowledges that there are still changes that need to be made, particularly in ensuring equitable practices within after-school sports for families of color. They believe that creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students, regardless of background, is crucial for the community to thrive.

Reflecting on their journey, the family’s greatest accomplishment has been seeing their three boys graduate from college, a testament to the power of education and perseverance. They have faced challenges along the way, including completing five college degrees while raising their children, but their determination and hard work have paid off.

In addition to their professional accomplishments, the family also shared a personal detail that many may not know about them – their love for dancing Cameroon Makossa and Nigerian afrobeat. This hobby brings them joy and contributes to their overall well-being.

Overall, this family’s story is a testament to the resilience and determination of those who come to Rochester in search of a better life. Their journey is a reminder of the importance of education, community support, and perseverance in overcoming challenges and achieving success.
