The Alpena Municipal Council recently made a decision that will transform the downtown area of Alpena, Michigan. The council voted to permanently close the alley that runs between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue behind the strip of Chisholm Street businesses, including Rusty Petunias and Hopside Brewery.
This closure will provide more space for the businesses to expand their outdoor offerings and enhance the walkability of the downtown area. Anne Gentry, the executive director of the Alpena Downtown Development Authority, shared that crews are currently working on moving handicap parking and dumpsters behind the businesses. They are also installing large flower boxes along the alleyway.
The goal is to transform the alley into a vibrant gathering space where people can enjoy outdoor dining, cocktails, entertainment, and events. The area is already adorned with murals and a small park, and it is quickly becoming its own district downtown.
Businesses along the alley are already planning how they can utilize the additional space. Hopside Brewery has added outdoor games like cornhole, while Mango’s Tequila Bar is considering adding a walk-up counter for drinks and food.
These improvements are just one part of the larger plan to revitalize downtown Alpena. A redesign of Culligan Plaza and the construction of new restroom facilities are also in the works. The city is focused on creating a more inviting and dynamic downtown area for residents and visitors alike.
