Pope Francis Delivers Message of Embracing Conflict for Peace in Verona
In a powerful address at a peace gathering in Verona, Italy, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of acknowledging and embracing conflicts in modern society. The pontiff warned against trying to impose a uniform vision, stating that it only fosters frustration and violence.
“A society without conflicts is a dead society. A society that hides conflicts is a suicidal society. A society that takes conflicts by the hand is a society of the future,” Pope Francis told the 12,500 people gathered in the ancient arena.
Highlighting the dangers of dictatorships that do not admit plurality, the pope stressed the need for people to learn how to deal with conflict before it escalates. He also emphasized the value of holding different opinions as healthy for society.
Despite his age and recent health issues, Pope Francis appeared in good form during his visit to Verona. He met with priests, children, and prisoners, spreading his message of peace and reconciliation.
The pope’s call for personal reconciliation was exemplified on stage when an Israeli man, who lost his parents in an attack by Hamas militants, embraced a Palestinian peace activist whose brother had died in an Israeli jail. The powerful gesture received applause from the audience.
Pope Francis continues to advocate for an end to fighting in various conflicts worldwide, urging people not to become spectators of wars. His message of building bridges and seeking peace resonates with his 11-year-old papacy, placing the drive for peace at the forefront of his mission.
